Cold air intakes are one of the most popular first modifications, and also one of the most misunderstood. So let us be honest up front: on a modern turbocharged car, a bolt-on intake on its own usually adds only modest power. The factory intake on most current cars is already reasonably well designed, and the turbo — not the intake — is doing the heavy lifting. If you are expecting a dyno-shifting jump from an intake alone, you will likely be disappointed.
That does not mean intakes are pointless. Far from it. What a good intake reliably improves is throttle response and induction sound — the car feels sharper and sounds noticeably better under acceleration, with more of that turbo induction and blow-off character coming through. And in the right context, an intake genuinely does contribute to real power. The trick is understanding when that context applies to you, and when your money is better spent elsewhere.
Where a Cold Air Intake Genuinely Helps
An intake stops being a mostly-cosmetic mod and starts adding real, measurable power in a few specific situations:
- Feeding a bigger turbo: if you have upgraded or plan to upgrade the turbo, it can demand more airflow than the stock intake tract can comfortably supply. Here a higher-flow intake removes a genuine restriction.
- Removing a real restriction: some cars genuinely do have a restrictive factory intake or a small airbox inlet. On those platforms, opening up the intake path frees up airflow the engine was actually being starved of.
- Stage 2 and beyond: once you have a remap, a downpipe and a freer exhaust, the engine is moving a lot more air. At that point the intake becomes part of a balanced system, and a higher-flow unit helps the whole package breathe. This is why intakes are usually recommended alongside, not instead of, a proper tune.
The pattern is clear: an intake pays off most when it is removing an actual bottleneck or feeding a system that already demands more air. On a stock car with a healthy factory airbox, that bottleneck often simply is not there yet.
Open vs Closed Airbox: The Heat-Soak Trade-Off
This is the single most important thing to understand about intakes, and where a lot of cheap kits get it wrong. There are two broad designs:
Open-Element Intakes
An open cone filter sitting in the engine bay looks great, sounds fantastic, and flows freely. The problem is heat soak: an exposed filter breathes the hot air rising off the engine and exhaust manifold. Hotter intake air is less dense, which can actually cost you power — exactly the opposite of what you wanted. On a moving car with good airflow this matters less, but in traffic, or sitting at lights on a hot Spanish day, an unshielded open intake can end up feeding the engine warm air.
Closed-Airbox Intakes
A closed or semi-closed airbox keeps the filter isolated from engine-bay heat, usually with a sealed enclosure and a dedicated cold-air feed from outside the bay. You lose a little of the loud induction roar, but you keep intake temperatures down and protect the power. For most road cars, a well-designed closed-airbox intake is the smarter engineering choice: it captures most of the flow and response benefits without the heat-soak penalty of a bare cone.

Filter Types and Maintenance
Most performance intakes use one of two filter types. Cotton-gauze (oiled) filters flow very well and are washable and reusable — you clean and re-oil them periodically. The main caution is over-oiling, which on some cars can foul a sensitive mass-airflow (MAF) sensor, so follow the manufacturer's oiling guidance carefully. Dry synthetic filters need no oil, are simpler to maintain (clean and refit), and avoid the MAF concern, at a small trade-off in outright flow on some designs.
Whichever you choose, a performance filter only keeps performing if you maintain it. A clogged, dirty filter flows worse than a clean stock paper element. Regular cleaning is part of owning one — budget for it and stick to the recommended intervals.
When a Stock Airbox and a Drop-In Filter Is Smarter
Here is the advice you will not always hear from someone trying to sell you a full intake kit: on many stock or Stage 1 cars, the smartest, best-value option is to keep the factory airbox and fit a high-flow drop-in panel filter. The factory airbox is already sealed from engine heat and fed with cold air from outside the bay — which, as we have seen, is exactly what you want. A drop-in filter gives you a small flow improvement while preserving all of that heat management, at a fraction of the cost and with zero fitment fuss.
A full intake makes the most sense once you are moving beyond Stage 1, feeding a bigger turbo, or your specific car has a genuinely restrictive factory airbox. Below that threshold, a drop-in filter is often the honest, sensible recommendation — and we would rather tell you that than sell you a part you do not need.
