Let's start with the truth most marketing skips: aerodynamic downforce scales with the square of speed. Double your speed and the aero forces roughly quadruple. That means at legal road speeds, the measurable downforce from a splitter or diffuser is modest — what you mainly get on the road is improved high-speed stability, reduced lift, and of course the visual transformation.
The serious numbers live at track speeds. Above roughly 130–150 km/h, well-designed aero starts producing meaningful downforce that you can feel in fast corners and under braking. This is why the same splitter is a styling statement on a daily driver and a functional tool on a track car — both owners bought the right part, for different reasons. Neither should pretend it's doing what the other's is.
Aero, Part by Part
Front Splitter
The splitter is a flat, forward-extending plane at the bottom of the front bumper. It works by separating high-pressure air hitting the front of the car from the faster, lower-pressure air travelling underneath. That pressure difference pushes down on the splitter's surface — downforce over the front axle, which translates to more front grip and sharper turn-in at speed.
Because the splitter leads the car into every driveway and speed bump, material and fitment matter enormously here. A splitter that flexes at speed loses its function; one that doesn't follow the bumper's exact contours looks aftermarket in the worst sense.
Canards (Dive Planes)
Canards are the small winglets mounted on the corners of the front bumper. They generate small amounts of local downforce, but their main job is managing airflow: creating vortices that seal the underbody's low-pressure zone and directing air away from the turbulent wheel wells. On road cars they're primarily aggressive styling; on time-attack cars they're carefully angled tools.
Side Skirts
Side skirt extensions lower the visual mass of the car and, functionally, help keep the faster underbody airflow separated from the turbulent air along the car's flanks. They tie the front splitter and rear diffuser together — both visually and aerodynamically — which is why a splitter without matching skirts can look unfinished.
Rear Diffuser
The diffuser is the sculpted, upswept section under the rear bumper — and it's the most misunderstood part on this list. A diffuser doesn't work alone: it works with the underbody. Air accelerates under the car (creating low pressure, which sucks the car down), and the diffuser's expanding channels slow that air back down gradually, letting it rejoin the ambient flow without turbulence. The smoother this recovery, the more effectively the whole underbody generates downforce. A diffuser bolted under a car with a messy, exposed underbody is mostly cosmetic — still a great look, but know what you're getting.
Spoilers vs Wings: Not the Same Thing
- A spoiler is a lip or blade attached to the trailing edge of the boot or roof. It "spoils" the airflow leaving the body — reducing lift and drag-inducing turbulence. Subtle, effective, OEM-friendly.
- A wing is a separate inverted airfoil mounted on stands, with airflow passing both over and under it. It actively generates downforce — significant amounts at speed — at the cost of some drag.
Most road cars want a spoiler. Track builds chasing rear grip at high speed want a wing. Mixing up the vocabulary is forgivable; mixing up the purpose gets expensive.
Full Body Kits
A body kit combines these elements — front lip or splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, often a spoiler — into one coherent design. The advantage over collecting parts piecemeal is design language: every element shares the same lines, angles and proportions, the way a factory M Performance or Cupra R kit does. The result reads as intentional rather than assembled.
Materials & Fitment: Where Quality Shows
Three materials dominate the aero world:
- ABS plastic: the modern standard for road use. Injection-moulded or thermoformed ABS is flexible enough to survive minor scrapes, holds its shape over time, takes paint beautifully, and is what most OEM lips and skirts are made from.
- Polyurethane (PU): heavier but extremely impact-resistant — it bends instead of cracking. A good choice for low splitters that will inevitably meet a kerb.
- Carbon fibre: the lightest and stiffest option, with the signature weave. Stiffness matters functionally (a splitter that flexes stops working), but quality varies enormously — poorly made "carbon" parts are often thin skins over fibreglass.
Just as important as material is how the part was designed. Quality aero is developed from 3D scans of the actual bumper and body panels, so every curve follows the factory surface. That's what eliminates the tell-tale signs of cheap aero: uneven gaps, edges that don't align, mounting points that need "persuasion". Many quality parts use both: bolts for structure, adhesive to keep edges flush against the body.
Installation Basics and Care
- Preparation is everything for adhesive mounts: clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, ensure it's completely dry, and work above 15 °C so the adhesive cures properly. Press firmly along the full length.
- Don't over-torque bolted parts: ABS and carbon can crack under an aggressively tightened bolt. Snug plus a quarter turn is usually right; follow the part's instructions where provided.
- Use support rods on splitters: an unsupported splitter overhang will flex at speed and fatigue at its mounting points.
- Care: wash aero parts as you would paintwork. For carbon, a UV-protective sealant or wax prevents the clear coat from yellowing. Check bolts and adhesive edges seasonally.

The best-looking builds follow one rule: commit to a design language. Two coherent directions:
- OEM+ (subtle): a front lip, discreet skirt extensions and a boot spoiler in gloss black or body colour. The car looks like a factory performance version — clean, mature, and it keeps daily usability (and driveways) drama-free.
- Track stance (aggressive): a proper splitter with support rods, canards, an aggressive diffuser and a wing. This direction only works when it's committed — one aggressive part on an otherwise stock car looks unfinished. It also assumes you accept the ground-clearance trade-offs.
Whichever direction you choose, keep materials and finishes consistent: mixing glossy carbon, matte black plastic and painted elements randomly is the fastest way to make quality parts look cheap.
